How to use this brain model

Use your mouse to move the brain around, and to zoom inside.

Put the cursor on the brain, click and hold the mouse, and move it a bit; let go; hold it down again, and move it some more. You can turn it around, look at the bottom, the top or from any angle. You’ll get the hang of it.

Use the zoom feature of your mouse to go straight in or make the brain really small. For Macintosh computers, a swipe up or down the middle of the mouse will zoom in and out. For PC computers, use the scroll wheel.

Click on the text to the left of the brain image to highlight the brain structures in red so they are highly visible.

Most brain regions have an arrowhead to the left of the text. If you click on the arrowhead you will see more subregions. If you un-check the box next to a brain region, it disappears!

The Ventral Tegmental Area is always highlighted in green. If you click on the text “Ventral_Tegmental_Area” it will turn yellow.

Here are a couple of fun things to do.

First:

Orient the brain so that the right side is facing you.
Uncheck the box next to the text “Cortex_Right_Hemisphere.” The right half of the brain will disappear and you will see the subcortical areas.
Click the arrowhead next to the text “Subcortical_Regions_Right.” A list of structures will appear.
Click on “Caudate_Right.” See what turns red—that’s the caudate without its tail. Now move the brain around to see the caudate from many different angles.
Click on amygdala or hippocampus and move around some more.

Second:

Make sure all the boxes are checked and you can see the whole brain.
Orient the brain so that the right side is facing you.
Click on “Caudate_right.” It will be highlighted red, but you won’t see it yet.
Zoom in until you see a piece of the caudate. Then move around inside the brain. Highlight the Midbrain_right. Move around some more. It will take some getting used to, but we think you will learn quickly.

Have fun trying out different angles and highlighting different structures.

This brain model is not complete. There are important parts missing, like the ventricles, septum, internal capsule and hypothalamic areas. There are no subnuclei of the thalamus or brainstem. There are no layers of the cortex or hippocampus. But we’re working on it!

We focused on parts of the brain important for romantic love and attachment.
