What is brain mapping?

  1. Brain mapping is the process of using fMRI (functional magnetic resonance imaging) technology to monitor what is happening in the brain in real time. With more than 100 billion brain cells at work (more than the number of stars in the Milky Way!), functional magnetic resonance imaging is a remarkable piece of technology that detects blood flow to brian regions by detecting and tracking iron in the red blood cells.

The idea is that when particular groups of brain cells are working harder, they require more energy, and thus, more blood flow. By putting together the collection of images, scientists can create a map of the brain that shows which areas are triggered by specific thoughts or feelings.
